The University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine (UTGSM) in Knoxville, a part of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, offers exceptional training in graduate medical and dental education. Beginning as the "Internship Program" in 1956 with the opening of the UT Memorial Research Center and Hospital, the graduate medical and dental educational and research programs in Knoxville formally became the UTGSM with the formation of the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) in 1991. We work closely with our clinical partner, University Health System Inc, as a part of the UTMC campus providing advanced quaternary medical care found only in an academic medical center. Today, the UTGSM is home to multiple, fully accredited residencies and fellowships in medicine, dentistry, and oral & maxillofacial surgery. We host 3rd year medical students from UTHSC on core clinical clerkships, PA students, and 4th year medical students from UTHSC and other institutions on elective rotations. Medical Student Education Third-year medical students from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center - College of Medicine in Memphis rotate on our core clerkships in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry. Medical students are an integral part of the health care team and receive individualized attention from faculty and residents. The GSM secures housing for the students who choose to complete some of their clerkships in Knoxville. Fourth-year electives are offered to encompass all specialties and subspecialties and are available to the COM students and to medical students across the country. Novel electives, including LGBTQ Health and Healthcare Transformation, are also available. Graduate Medical Education The Graduate School of Medicine is the fully accredited institutional sponsor of its graduate medical and dental education programs. The University of Tennessee Medical Center is the primary training site for the GME programs. The clinical volume at UTMC offers our GME trainees a robust education in patient care and procedures. The GSM currently sponsors 11 residency programs and 12 subspecialty fellowships, with three new fellowships starting in July 2022. Our programs welcome diversity, focus on the well-being our trainees and achieve high board pass rates. Research Research at the Graduate School of Medicine focuses on transformative clinical and translational research in the areas of therapeutics, diagnostics, health care disparities with an emphasis on Appalachia and quality improvement that will favorably impact the lives of our patients while enhancing the reputations of the UTGSM and UTMC both regionally and nationally. The GSM has a long history of successful applied research in the areas of shock, trauma and nutrition, vascular disease, molecular imaging, regenerative medicine, and systemic amyloidosis. Research at the GSM spans ten departments comprising numerous clinical and translational science faculty, medical residents and fellows, student researchers, laboratory staff, and administrative support personnel. For example, the NIH-funded Amyloidosis and Cancer Theranostics Program under the direction of Jon Wall PhD, University Distinguished Professor, focuses on the development and translation of biologicals for the imaging and therapy of systemic amyloid diseases. The GSM provides infrastructure and resources that can contribute to the success of research activities and aligns many of its endeavors with the overall mission and values of University of Tennessee Medical Center. In addition, we offer unique educational and research opportunities and collaborations with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, including the Colleges of Nursing, Engineering, Business and Veterinary Medicine as well as nearby Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
